European sanctions targeted three former officers of the Republican Guard and Armed Forces — Miqdad Fatiha, Ghaith Dalla, and Suhayl al-Hasan — for their involvement in torture, extrajudicial executions, and forming militias after the fall of the regime that contributed to escalating tensions and the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
Businessmen Mudalal Khoury and Imad Khoury were also listed for financially supporting the former Assad regime and representing its economic interests in Russia, including the funding of crimes against humanity.
The sanctions include asset freezes, a ban on providing financial resources, and travel restrictions to European Union countries.
The Council affirmed it will continue monitoring the situation in Syria and is prepared to take further action against human rights violators and those fueling instability.
The EU Council announced the sanctions in a press release on June 23.
It’s worth noting that sectarian militias led by former Assad army officers attacked Syrian security forces aligned with the new government, sparking widespread violence in coastal towns and cities that claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar’a has formed an investigative committee to examine the violence and its causes, vowing to pursue those responsible and hold violators accountable.
