The media office of the Syrian Ministry of Education announced that 4.2 million students headed to 12,000 schools across the country yesterday, September 21, 2025.
The office stated that the directorates of education completed school maintenance, including classroom seating, sanitation facilities, and comprehensive disinfection.
This marks the first academic year in which Syrian students return to their educational institutions without the Baath and Assad regime in place—for the first time in sixty years.
As for the school curricula, most remain unchanged, except for the removal of the “Nationalism” subject and all content related to the Arab Socialist Baath Party and the former ruling leadership.
The National Center for Curriculum Development at the Ministry of Education designed a content analysis card, a curriculum evaluation form, and a questionnaire for selecting curriculum authors back on March 6, 2025.
Center Director Hassan Al-Qassem announced a meeting with the Norwegian Refugee Council, and the launch of workshops under the “Toward Better Learning” program, aligned with the national life skills curriculum. The initiative aims to support teachers and students in public schools by enhancing psychosocial support and recovery skills during crises and emergencies.
According to the Ministry of Education, the number of destroyed schools in Syria has reached 8,000, including:
2,000 schools requiring major repairs
5,000 needing moderate maintenance
500 requiring full reconstruction
Only 156 schools have been renovated by local and international organizations, along with community efforts, as of mid-2026. Additionally, 19,000 educational facilities require periodic maintenance due to neglect or partial damage.
UNESCO’s regional director, Paolo Fontani, emphasized the importance of assessing the scale of damage in schools and developing a joint rehabilitation plan with the Ministry of Education. He also praised the positive role of international organizations in supporting education during a meeting with Syrian Minister of Education Abdulrahman Turko on June 23, 2025.
