The Syrian Arab Republic recognized the Republic of Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state on October 29, 2025, following a trilateral meeting in Riyadh that included both republics and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
A statement issued by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the decision aims to expand cooperation and openness to countries around the world, serving mutual interests and strengthening friendship between peoples.
Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani said that both the Syrian and Kosovar peoples have suffered and sacrificed greatly in pursuit of freedom, and that mutual recognition with Syria is not merely a recognition of sovereignty, but also an acknowledgment of the sacrifices of many generations for the sake of living freely. Osmani thanked President Shar’a for the recognition and support of the people of Kosovo in a Facebook post.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry’s statement appreciated Saudi Arabia’s efforts in bridging perspectives, which contributed to the decision. Syria looks forward to establishing diplomatic relations with Kosovo as soon as possible and to developing bilateral cooperation.
Syrian President Ahmad Shar’a, accompanied by his Foreign Minister As’ad al-Shibani, met with Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani for the first time during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Turkey on April 11, 2025.
